How to clear App Cache or Clear App Data?

Anyone who has ever encountered a problem of an app or software on Android may have been given the advice “clear the app cache” or “clear the app data”. These two Apps are the solutions which work like a miracle cures for Android, but what is the difference between these two seemingly similar operations? Let me explain what they are, and how they work and when to use them?


What is clearing the App Cache?

This is the temporary storage area of a device, which retains certain kinds of data. The purpose of this App is to speed up your phone that how quickly and smoothly your device operates and reduce how much data is processed and consumed.

Have you ever noticed how slow your camera app is to open at first when you restarting your phone, while each subsequent attempt is quicker? The increase in speed of your phone after the initial launch of an app is thanks to this cached data. You might also find that websites load faster on a second visit it is because of the files already stored in Cache like images of a website.


There is no need to manually manage cached data because Android is capable of doing this on its own. But if an app starts to misbehave or stop working at your phone then you may wish to manually take this step to solve it.

When you clear an app’s cached data, you remove all temporary files stored there, and you’ll be surprised how simple this step works. What does ‘clear app data’ mean?

Clearing app data is a more severe step as compare to App Cache. The cache will clear with little risk to app settings, preferences and saved states but clearing the app data it will delete/remove these entirely or permanently.


Clearing data to reset an app to its default state like it acts and works like when you first downloaded and installed any App on your phone. For example, you can make changes to the settings of your favorite fitness app and change the length of exercises and sound settings.

How to clear App Cache or App Data?

  • Go to the Settings Menu in your phone
  • Click on Apps button
  • Find the All tab and if your phone doesn’t show you all apps by default
  • Choose an app that is taking up a lot of space in your phone
  • Click the button Clear Cache. If you’re running Android 6.0 Marshmallow or newer, then you’ll need to click on Storage and then Clear Cache.
  • To clear the app data instead of the cache, simply select Clear Data instead


However, it only works to clean one app on your phone. If you want to clean the cache of every app at the same time, then:

  • Go to Settings in your phone
  • Click on Storage>Cache Data or Saved Data
  • A screen will appear and ask for confirmation to remove everything stored within the caches. Confirm and save to remove the content.
