Reddit, also known as the home page of the Internet, is one of the largest and most visited sites on the Internet. Like all other user-generated content sites, it has its fair share of not-so-relevant content. So what to do when a bad post is voted and appears on your r / all list?
In the past, blocking subreddits that weren’t your cup of tea was a breeze. Today, Reddit users have to dig deeper to claim sovereignty over their r / all streams.
Back then it was easy
The day before the complete reddit of Reddit, users could filter their feeds quite easily. Blocking specific routines was a breeze, with the option readily available on the r / all page. All you had to do to remove a boring subreddit from your feed was to enter your name in the search box labeled Filter Subreddit, click the + icon and you’re done.
However, in 2018, after more than 12 months of development and testing, Reddit launched the redesigned site. It was the site’s first major visual overhaul in more than a decade. With the new design came the more elegant graphics and a few other changes. The r / all page has lost the sub-filter search area.
As of this writing, the default Reddit view is new. However, nostalgic users can return to the previous view which has been moved to https://old.reddit.com. All new messages are posted there for now. If you register an account on the new site, you can also use it on the old site.
The site above is as it was before the redesign, including the sub-filter search area on the r / all page. You can try it out and enter the name of a subreddit that you want to ban from your feed. It will disappear from your old Reddit feed. However, the subreddit that you block on the old site will not be blocked on the new one.
Therefore, it may seem that users of the new Reddit site are defenseless against subreddits they do not want in their feeds. But this is not entirely true. Let’s see how you can ban unwanted communities from your r / all feed.
How to block subreddits today
Since the search box for the subreddit filter is missing from the feed, there is practically nothing a normal user can do to eject spam voted by the community. This is true for the desktop version of the site and for native mobile applications.
But all is not lost for those who do not wish to use third-party applications and extensions, can switch to Reddit Premium. The premium version of the site or application, depending on the platform you use, will allow you to block specific sub-credits of the r / all flow.
To switch to Premium Membership, click the small triangle-down next to your avatar (upper right corner of the browser window), then click the User Settings option. Then click on the Reddit Premium tab and click on the Get Premium link. Click the Get Reddit Premium button on the next page and select your payment option. Follow the rest of the instructions.
When you have finished updating, go to the r / all page and start hitting the lock hammer. The process is largely the same as in the previous version of Reddit.
Native mobile apps
When it comes to blocking specific routines, mobile device users are unlucky, just like their desktop/laptop counterparts. There is no option to use Block Hammer in the Android or iOS version of the Reddit app. What they can do is upgrade to Reddit Premium and use their computer browser to remove unwanted subreddits.
To update via a mobile device, download and install the Reddit app. Launch the application from the home screen of your device. Tap your avatar (it’s in the upper left corner of Android) and tap the Reddit Premium tab. Press the Get Premium button and follow the instructions.
In addition to the ability to block subreddits, a Premium subscription will allow you to purchase Reddit Gold, the currency on the site that you can use in interaction with other users and their content. Ultimately, Reddit will stop showing you ads. The monthly fee is $ 5.99 and, once purchased, Reddit Premium will be available on all devices you use.
If you want to claim your r / all feed but are reluctant to pay hard-earned money to Reddit, you can use one of the many browser extensions. Our favorite is the Reddit Enhancement Suite. The application is available for Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari.
For the purposes of this article, we have used the version of Google Chrome. The best thing about this extension is that there are lots of tips and tutorials on how to use it on Reddit. Download and install the extension. Now let’s see how to hide a problematic subreddit in your r / all feed.
Step 1: Open your browser. Go to https://www.reddit.com.
Step 2: Click the RES extension button. A drop-down menu will appear.
Stage 3: Click on Options Depending on the version, you can see a gear icon. Click on it.
Step 4: The Reddit Enhancement Suite page opens. Click on the filterReddit tab in the left menu.
Step 5: Activate the option filterReddit (filterReddit).
Step 6:Scroll through the pages and customize the locked Subreddit settings.
Step 7: Check the + add filter button in the lower-left corner of the box.
Step 8: Enter the subreddit you no longer want to see.
If you want to block other subroutines, repeat steps 8 and 9. When you are finished, scroll up and click the Save Options button.
Defend your position
With the new design and the new layout, Reddit has decided to recover the r / all stream. However, users who do not want to take what is served in the stream can still claim their independence from the Reddit algorithm. Available options include paying for Premium membership and installing third-party applications.
