Note 10 Which Has Only A 1080p Screen Is Not A Big Deal

The new Samsung Note 10 phone duo is bright, powerful and quite attractive. But they didn’t come with their share of controversy. On the one hand, Samsung has removed the headphone jack. This is a blow to the fans and advanced users who used to praise Sammy for keeping the “old school” jack at a time when almost all the other big producers are taking it off.

Secondly, the smaller note 10 comes with “only” a resolution of 1080 x 2280 pixels (FHD+), while the note 10+ preserves QHD + (1440 x 3040). Now, this is an annoying success since the Note 10 starts at $ 950 and Samsung has installed the QHD panels on its Note phones from the Galaxy Note 4. It seems less like a “corner cut” that was made to lower the price and more since Samsung is making a conscious effort to push advanced users to pay the Galaxy Note 10+ for $1100.

Don’t Worry, It Will Still Be Nice

Don’t worry, I’m here to argue that 1080p isn’t bad or a bit and that it won’t bother you. See, even with the “lower” FHD + resolution, the 6.3-inch screen of the Galaxy Note 10 still has a pixel density of 400 pixels per inch. This is well above the “standard” which states that the human eye cannot discern individual pixels when it reaches 320 ppi and will appear quite sharp.

Now that it has been solved, the main argument that will arise is “Does it matter when you put the phone in virtual reality glasses: 1080p is clearly worse than 1440p then!”. And I agree but here’s another series of bad news: both the Galaxy Note 10 and the Galaxy Note 10+ will not support the Samsung Gear VR glasses. This was reported by technology expert Anshel Sag, who allegedly asked Samsung directly whether Gear VR will work or not with a note 10.

So, yes, the topic of virtual reality is a bit questionable when Samsung itself is trying to suspend the efforts of virtual reality. Yes, you can say that there are still generic virtual reality glasses based on the Google Cardboard model, which you can still use. But let’s be honest here for a moment: those never worked well enough and were not as functional as Sam VR Gear. Technology fans have moved to much more powerful and dedicated gaming machines.

Going back to the 1080p topic, it will be fine. In fact, in 2014, when producers were slowly shifting from FHD to QHD, many users, critics and experts were opposed to that change. It was simply too much pressure on the phone hardware for a great improvement in sharpness. The difference between 720p and 1080p is visible 1080p at 1440p, not so much. Law of diminishing returns in full effect.

Nowadays, we are used to our incredibly expensive phones with excessive specifications. And, if you want to be annoyed by the fact that Samsung has “degraded” the screen just to make the Note 10 “lower”, I can see the reasoning there.

However, having said that, if you want a compact Note phone, get the small Note 10 with confidence. Hey, it might even work better with that smaller 3,400 mAh battery. Fewer pixels to push = less stress on the hardware!
