Qualcomm Is Working On A New Smart Watch Chip With More Power

Qualcomm is preparing a new set of chips for smartwatches. The chip maker’s current Wear 3100 has not knocked down the watchmakers’ doors and is about to be replaced by a new chip called “Snapdragon Wear 429” or “Snapdragon Wear 2700”. This chip will be produced through the 12 nm process and will feature Cortex-A53 CPU cores along with 64-bit support. Compare these specifications with the Wear 3100, which is made up of a much wider 28 nm process and comes with four Cortex-A7 cores. The 3100 offers 32-bit support. The node size which is quite small should allow Qualcomm to introduce more transistors in Wear 429 / Wear 2700. This will eventually make it more powerful and less energy-hungry than all of its predecessor.


The Wear 3100 device was labeled as a low-power chip that has a coprocessor to control simple tasks that don’t need the full computing power of its Cortex-A7 cores. This keeps the lights on when the user is not busy interacting with the watch. It is said that the battery life of a watch with 3100 wear is between 36 – 60 hours. However, the latest Wear OS watches continue to use the previous Wear 2100 chipset, introduced in 2016. The Wear 3100 model was introduced in 2018.

The report also points outs that Qualcomm is testing the Wear 429 / Wear2700 chip with a platform that includes 1 GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 8 GB of eMMC memory. It is said that the chip includes an energy-saving function that sends some activities to reduce the chips or the power cores in order to save battery.

The name of Wear 429 suggests that the new chip is based on the Snapdragon 429 mobile platform, which also uses a 12 nm mode and presents the Cortex-A53 cores. The Nokia 3.2 and some other phones have the Snapdragon 429 SoC under the hood. Based on the similarity between the two sets of chips, the Wear 429 device could run at a maximum clock speed of 2 GHz compared to 1.2 GHz for Wear 3100.
