The Sony Xperia 2 has leaked completely weeks before the Xperia 1’s release

The Sony Xperia 1 was first announced in February and is currently on track for launch next month. However, Sony is already working hard on the flagship’s successor and for that thanks to Steve Hemmerstoffer, we now know how the Xperia 2 will look.

From the front Xperia 2 looks like a smaller Xperia 1

Like its predecessor still to be released, the Sony Xperia 2 looks set to debut later this year with an extra tall 21: 9 display on the card. However, this time, the panel’s diagonal has been reduced from 6.5 inches to 6.1 inches, a move that should make the Xperia 2 (158 x 68.3 x 8.3 mm) much easier to hold on to the Xperia 1 (167 x 72 x 8.2 mm).

Today, most flagship smartphones come with a large notch (iPhone XS), a small notch (Huawei P30 Pro) or a hole in one of the corners (Galaxy S10). However, Sony will remain faithful to traditional bezels for another generation and apparently, has no plans for changes.

Looking at the aluminum frame of the Xperia 2, the upper part houses a microphone, while the lower area includes a large speaker grill with a USB-C port and a second microphone. As for the sides, the right side of the smartphone houses elongated volume control, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, a power button, and a dedicated shutter button. The left side of the flagship, on the other hand, seems to include a waterproof flap that presumably hides the microSD and SIM card slots.

The triple configuration of the Sony camera

Although the front of the Xperia 2 has relatively few changes, Sony has made a rather drastic change to the back. Specifically, the configuration of the triple camera that was previously in the center of the panel has now moved to the upper left corner.

It is not clear at this time why the decision was made to reorganize the rear panel, but it could have something to do with battery life. Last year, Samsung adopted a vertically aligned camera configuration in the Galaxy S9 series. However, this year it abandoned the design in favor of a horizontal one because it allowed inserting a larger battery inside.

Obviously, Sony’s configuration does not match the design seen in Samsung’s latest flagships, but it is now hidden in a corner, which means that the Japanese company could put a bigger battery if it wanted to.

Back to the cameras, Sony could prepare some updates for the individual Xperia 2 sensors. But in the most likely scenario, the flagship will simply borrow its Xperia 1 cameras. The latter, for those of you who don’t know, has three 12-megapixel sensors, one of which acts as the main camera, another from super wide-angle and the third from 2x snapper with optical zoom.

Sony Xperia 2 specs, price and release date

The Sony Xperia 2, like flagship smartphone of 2019, must be shipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 inside. Presumably, it will include a minimum of 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, although Sony may choose to increase these to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage to better compete with rival devices.

Consumers can also expect to notice Android 9 Pie pre-installed with support for 4G LTE. Sony is said to be working on its 5G smartphones, but support for next-generation networks is unlikely to flow into this next flagship.

As for the release date of the Xperia 2, Sony has a habit of announcing the flagship devices at the annual IFA event in Berlin. Should this happen, it is likely to come before a release in mid-October, like last year’s Xperia XZ3.

At the moment it is not clear how Sony will decide to apply a price to the Xperia 2, but the Xperia 1 will cost $999 in the US. So the flagship of the company’s next generation can also sell for the price of that price.
