Before we proceed, it is very important to explain what exactly happens on your network when you notice this error. To do so, let’s focus on some basics of home networking.

Wireless devices such as laptop connect to your router. All the connections between the devices in your home are handled by the router. The router plugs into a modem, a device that is used to bridge the traffic between your home network and the internet.

When you see the error connected but no internet, Connected, no internet access, or similar errors on your computer, it means that your computer is connected to the router correctly but it is not connecting to the internet. On the contrast, if you see no internet or Not connected, no internet connection messages, it means that your computer is not connected to a router at all.

This gives you some important clues about what the issue is, as we’ll see below.

1. Confirm other devices can’t connect

Before we can get to troubleshooting, it is essential to determine whether your PC is the only device with no internet connection.

Take out your phone or another computer that’s connected to Wi-Fi and see if it is online and working properly.

On Android, you will notice an X icon over the symbol of Wi-Fi and you will see that you’re connected to your mobile network for data. iPhone and iPad users can visit Settings => Wi-Fi and check for the message of no internet connection.

If your computer is the only machine that is not connecting, then there might be a reason for misconfigured setting on that device. But if you are facing the issue on every device, the problem lies with your network equipment and keeping that reason in mind you can skip some of the PC-only steps below.

Before heading toward, if the problem affects all of your devices, you should perform a quick test. Disconnect the Ethernet cable that is connecting your modem to the router, and use it to connect your computer to the modem directly instead.

If you can get online with this setup, the problem is with your router. You should proceed through the following troubleshooting step and not fix your issue; your router is likely the main problem here.

2. Reboot your PC

This step is optional if you are facing the connection issue on multiple devices.

As with many issues, rebooting your computer is the first troubleshooting step you should try. If you’re lucky, you might clear up some temporary glitch by restarting and then can get back to work.

Most of this advice assumes that you’re using a wireless connection. However, if you connect to your router through an Ethernet cable, you can also try another cable at this time to confirm that yours isn’t faulty.

3. Reboot your modem and router

4. Run the Windows network troubleshooter

If you’re facing this issue with your Windows PC only, then there may be something wrong with your computer’s network settings. Although Windows troubleshooter usually doesn’t fix issues completely it is worth a try before you should move on.

Go to Settings to access the network troubleshooter then Network & Internet => Status. Select Network troubleshooter and follow the steps to see if it resolves the issue or not.

Note: On Windows 7, you will have to visit Start => Control Panel => Troubleshooting => Network and Internet => Network Connections.

5. Check your IP address settings

This step is optional if you are facing the connect issue on multiple devices.

Next, you should take one of the important steps to diagnose network issues: first, make sure your computer has a valid IP address. In most of the home networks, the router hands out an address to devices when they connect. If the IP settings of your computer aren’t accurate, it can cause the problem of “no internet access”

On Windows 10, in your System Tray, right-click on the network icon and choose Open Network & Internet settings. Click the Change adapter options entry and after that double-click the connection that you’re using.


On Windows 7, right-click the network icon and select Open Network and Sharing Center. Click on the name of your network that you can see next to Connections.


After that, click on the Properties button. Look for Internet Protocol Version 4 in the list and double-click on that. Make sure your system has obtained an IP address and DNS server address automatically both selected.


Click OK and then try to get online again to see if this is working for you.

6. Check your ISP’s status

If you are still on the same point, it’s worth checking if your internet service provider (ISP) is having an issue. Although this is quite rare, it could explain why you can’t get online.

Use your phone’s data connection to see if Verizon, Comcast, or whoever provides service in your area has reported outages.

7. Try a few command prompt commands

This step is optional if you are facing the connect issue on multiple devices.

Windows features various networking commands in the command prompt. You need to attempt a few of them when you have no internet access in Windows 10.

Type cmd into the Start Menu after that, right-click on it and select Run as administrator to open a Command Prompt window.

For the purpose of resetting some of the files Windows keep to access the internet, use the below mentioned two commands:

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset

If that doesn’t work for you, try to release your computer’s IP address and obtain a fresh one with these two commands, run one at a time:

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

After that refresh the DNS settings of your computer with this command:

ipconfig /flushdns

If you still have no internet access, then try some more steps that are mentioned below.

8. Disable security software

This step is optional if you are facing the connect issue on multiple devices.

Another uncommon, but the considerable scenario is that you have some security software running on your PC preventing access to the internet.

Disable any third-party antivirus apps that you have installed and see if this resolves the connection issue. As we are talking about security, it’s worth running a malware scan with an app like Malwarebytes.

9. Update your wireless drivers

This step is optional if you are facing the connect issue on multiple devices.

In normal cases, you don’t need to update your computer drivers, as doing so often causes more problems. But as you’re still facing the issue, you should definitely check for driver updates.

10. Reset your network

At this point, if you’ve performed all the above-mentioned steps and still have the “no internet access but connected” error, there’s not much you can do to solve that other than resetting network settings.


If your Windows 10 PC is the only device you can’t connect with, you can reset your network and for that, you need to visit Settings => Network & Internet => Status. Click on the Network reset text that you can see at the bottom of the screen, after that click on Reset now. This step will completely remove all the network adapters and sets your network settings back to the defaults.

Note: After performing this step you will eventually have to set up everything again. But chances are it might fix the issue.

Unfortunately, there is no equivalent of this in Windows 7, you can only simulate part of this reset.

In your system Tray, Right-click on the network icon, select Open Network and Sharing Center and click Change adapter settings. After that, right-click the adapter you’re using, and select Disable.

Reboot and enable again to see if that fixed anything.

When you can’t get online with any devices, your best option is resetting your router (and modem, if required). Look for a small pinhole on the back or bottom of your router and hold it in for about several seconds to reset it to factory defaults. If you see no reset button, you’ll need to log in to your router and run the factory reset from there.

After resetting everything, you can run the initial setup with factory defaults. If it still won’t work after that, there is a greater chance that is having faulty equipment.
