The management of the Active Directory directory service is an important part of the Microsoft administration process, many companies have implemented an Active Directory that allows the administration of users, computers, groups, and permissions within a domain.
Its administration is quite simple, but it can be simplified even more.
This is essential to become familiar with the various tools that are provided for this purpose. Almost all tools use Microsoft Management Console (MMC) add-ins to provide the user interface.
The program group Administrative Tools on the Start menu includes some add-ons, but for daily operation, others must be added manually using the Add Add-in function of the MMC.
Some of the Active Directory administration tools are programs that run every day, while others are only needed during the installation of Active Directory or occasionally thereafter.
The MMC snap-ins that provide the Active Directory management functions are the following:
- Active Directory installation wizard creates domain controllers, new domains, trees and forests.
- Active Directory Domains and Trusts changes domain mode manages trust relationships between domains, and configures the suffixes of the user principal name (UPN).
- Active Directory users and computers create, manage, and configure Active Directory objects.
- Active Directory Sites and Services creates and configures domain sites and manages the replication process of the domain controller.
- Active Directory schema modifies the schema that defines Active Directory objects and properties.
For this, we can install the administration console on a PC with Windows 7. This will allow us to perform any maintenance without the need to enter the server to do so. With which, we must follow the following steps:
Search and download the update ” Remote Administration Tools of the Server ” ( Remote Server Administration Tools). You can download it from the official Microsoft website at the following link:
Once downloaded, double-click on the executable and wait for it to complete the update.
When finished, go to the Windows Start menu -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features.
And we will click on the option on the left “Activate or deactivate Windows features”.
Inside, we look for the option “Remote administration tools of the server” , we display the list and within “Function management tools” -> “AD DS and AD LDS tools ” -> “AD DS Tools” , we will check The following options:
Administrative Center Active Directory and Tools command line and accessories AD DS and we put OK.
Once completed, within the browser start putting ” Users and Computers Active Directory ” ( Active Directory Users and Computers ) us the same management console as the server appears.
If our domain user has administrator permissions, we will not have problems in order to optimally manage the AD from our PC.
After completing the installation of Active Directory, you may not be able to start the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, and you may receive an error message that indicates that it is not possible to contact any authority for authentication. This can happen if DNS is not configured correctly. To resolve this problem, check if the DNS server zones are correctly configured and that the zone has authority for the zone that contains the Active Directory domain name. If the zones appear to be correct and the server has authority for the domain, try restarting the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in. If you receive the same error message, use the DCPROMO utility to remove Active Directory, restart the computer, and then reinstall Active Directory.
